In a field on the south coast of Ireland and surrounded by her pedigree Lleyn flock, Orla Barry introduces her hybrid practice as both an artist and a sheep farmer.
Barry’s work is characterised by embodied research and findings connected to her activities, and in response to the flock she maintains. What results, is an experience-led contemplation on sociological, agricultural and ecological transformations that occur subtly and gradually in her surroundings. Across a variety of media: performance, video, text and sound, Barry comments on rural life, keenly observed through direct involvement and represented in a contemporary visual art practice.
Because of its utilitarian design and due to a number of economic factors, the Renault 4 became the car of choice for rural workers across France and Ireland during the 1960s and 70s, and so the car itself is a memento of shared industrial and agricultural history. Panoramic views of Barry’s flock, from within the Renault 4 act as visual accompaniment to this unique artist talk, live streamed as part of K7 dans la R4.
