For the Co.Cork pit stop, the Renault 4 arrives with ‘Dooris Day’ a large monochord the size of a door, transported on the on the roof as part of tour de force. The monochord made by Brian Leach in 2024, is exchanged for a smaller zither instrument, affectionately named, ‘Ghost Machine Part Deux’ which will take its place on the tour.
During this exchange pitstop musician, composer, visual artist and luthier Brian Leach plays a special live set on his Dulcimer in the Renault for K7 dans la 4L on the way to unveil a hybrid artwork - a massive musical instrument, a new invention - an experimental sonic and sculptural work that incorporates many stringed instruments: monochords, zithers, harps, guitars and dulcimers, all made, gathered and repaired by Brian to form one giant instrument. The experiments take place at Outlaw Studios, near the site of the old Ford factory in Cork which is no longer an active car assembly plant, but closed in 1984, after operating for decades and playing a significant role in the city's economy.
Brian has a multifaceted, multidisciplinary, approach to music with abundant inspiration and ingenuity as well as an applied and practical skillset as a luthier. We might think of the wandering musician Michael O’ Shea who traveled around Ireland in the 70s undertaking a wide range of jobs and activities over the years, which by his own account included, ‘barman, waiter, soldier, labourer, packer, wireman, hippie, factory worker, salesman, hobo, manager, leather craftsman, odd job man, clerical worker, reconciliation relief worker, social worker, sculptor, designer, collector, joker, transvestite, inventor, psychonaut, actor, catalyst, community worker, musician, traveller, instrument maker...’ Much like Michael O’Shea, Brian plays dulcimers and zither-like instruments of his own making, conjuring otherworldly melodies to imagine and create soundscapes for another realm.
Brian Leach is currently performing with folk groups Lisa O'Neill and MacBóchra, while creating new instruments in his workshop, Cork Guitars.
